Pennsylvania tripled number of nursing home fines in 2015

Nursing homes across Pennsylvania are feeling more heat as state authorities crank up enforcement in response to criticism that residents are not being cared for adequately.

In 2015, the state Department of Health put at least 19 nursing homes’ licenses on provisional status and issued 32 fines — about double and triple the 2014 numbers, respectively.


Sam Brooks, an attorney with Community Legal Services of Philadelphia, last year authored a report that pointed out a steep decline in the department’s enforcement actions over several years.

“This,” he said Thursday, “is a good start.”
