Attorney for beleagured New Orleans renters fights uphill battle

Adams is one of just a few advocates in New Orleans who sees the squalor many New Orleans residents live in every day.

Some of the clients Adams has worked for have been in horrifying situations. She had a client with such a bad rat infestation, rodents had eaten through the bottom of a baby’s crib and the family had to sleep in the living room to avoid getting bitten. Another client in a landlord dispute got locked out of his house with all of his belongings inside.

Sometimes, Adams finds herself going far beyond what most lawyers would do to help a client. Rashaed Fairley moved into an apartment in Hoffman Triangle with no appliances. Adams found a fridge on Craigslist and convinced the owner to give it to Fairley for free.
