Legal assistance helps SIU patients deal with non-medical challenges

After beginning in January 2016, the medical-legal partnership, funded with $215,000 in federal grant funds for last year and this year, has helped SIU patients in almost 300 cases.

For Tara Shipley, 55, the legal assistance she learned about through her SIU psychiatrist helped her qualify for federal Supplemental Security Income in March.

The $735 per month in SSI checks aren’t a lot. But the income for Shipley — a divorced, former successful real-estate saleswoman who is unemployed — helped her avoid becoming homeless after the death of her father and dementia that put her mother in a nursing home.
