For Tara Shipley, 55, the legal assistance she learned about through her SIU psychiatrist helped her qualify for federal Supplemental Security Income in March.
The $735 per month in SSI checks aren’t a lot. But the income for Shipley — a divorced, former successful real-estate saleswoman who is unemployed — helped her avoid becoming homeless after the death of her father and dementia that put her mother in a nursing home.
