Housing Groups Convene Campaign To Reduce Evictions

According to EvictionLab data, Richmond, Hampton and Newport News are in the top five large cities across the country with the highest eviction rates all over 10%.

Virginia Poverty Law Center attorney Christie Marra says those numbers are likely higher, because she says many people move out before they’re officially evicted. “Once that eviction is on your record, it is like a scarlet E,” Marra said. “You are going to have a really hard time finding a reputable landlord to rent to you.”

As part of the coalition’s work, a group of VCU students will examine court files to learn more about why people are getting evicted in the first place, what can be done to prevent them from occurring as well as how to help those already with evictions find affordable housing.
