That’s why pen pal programs to immigrants stuck in detention — conducted jointly by HIAS and Freedom for ImmigrantsLutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), and multiple other nonprofits spanning the country — have taken off in recent months, advocates told Mashable.
