Texas’ Top Judge Asks Lawmakers For Big Changes

The top judge on the Texas Supreme Court gave lawmakers a big wish list this week during his State of the Judiciary speech — his first address to the legislature since Hurricane Harvey hit Texas.

When it comes to spending, Hecht says Texas should allocate more money for legal aid than it already does, so that the 5.5 million Texans who couldn’t otherwise afford access to the legal system without some financial help from the state can get it, especially veterans and victims of sexual assault.

“Every year lawyers donate millions of dollars plus two million hours in free legal services,” Hecht said. “Yet with all that effort, estimates are that only 10 percent of the need is met.”
