LSC is an independent, non-profit corporation established by Congress to provide funding for civil legal aid to low-income Americans.
President Trump has attempted to cut the organization’s funding several times, most recently in his proposed budget for fiscal year 2020. However, he’s run into strong opposition from the legal community and lawmakers.
There are 11 members of the LSC board of directorswho are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The current chair, John G. Levi, was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009 and confirmed by the Senate in 2010. Levi is a partner at Sidley Austin.
